  • Hey Shawn,

I wish I could tell you where to find a decent donair outside of A.C. but I don't think it is possible. I live in Ottawa and I have yet to find anything comparable to what I get when I am in Fredericton or Saint John.

The other thing I miss are mini-sips. I used to buy them at the SuperStore and freeze them. I was even going to bring some back the last time I was down there, but I was afraid they would explode in my bag on the plane so I left them behind.

    Sigh
    • You know another thing that I really miss about being out of the Maritimes? Not being able to find any Sussex Gold Ginger Ale!! That's absolutely the best ginger ale going and only in the Maritimes....everytime that someone goes "back home" by car, they've got orders from all the other misplaced Maritimers to bring back some Sussex....I've got 2 cases waiting for me in Ottawa at the moment! *YUM*

(It's my "I'm-sick-and-have-a-sore-throat" drink too....it gets rationed like you wouldn't believe!)

As to the donair problem....I think the difference is the donair sauce....I've not been able to order a good garlic fingers (with bacon) and donair sauce since I've been here! Quebec seems stuck on nasty garlic spread.....really oily!

    • The only places where I found good donairs outside of A.C. is near military bases. You can try there if your close to any. There has to be one close to NDHQ. I've found places that serve donairs but get the sauce wrong, it is some kind of translucent gel. I found other places where the sauce was close but they use gyro meat, not a good combo. I miss being able to smell like garlic for days.

On ocassion though the IGA or Sobey's may have a donair kit in the frozen food section. The sauce is half decent but there is never enough meat and you might want to get your own pita.

I haven't thought about mini sips in so long. I just read you post and I am having an awful craving for a red one.
  • Take some solace that you can drive to Caledonia and Eglington and get a huge, real, Italian sandwich at Commisso Bros. Bakery! Man, the old women that make these dont even speak English!

There used to be a "Newfie Club" on the Danforth about 15 years ago when I lived there, if I recall correctly, there was a sandwich shop around there that made a good donair.

    Regards, John
  • Unsu...

have also been on a hunt for a 'real' donair and checked the greco website as suggested. these are not really greco locations... sounds like some greco products are available at the various coffee shops and variety stores. sounds a bit sketchy, but i'm desperate and will keep my fingers crossed!
  • East coast residents of Toronto, I have the answer to your prayers.

Just north of Dundas square is Elm Street. A small road off Young, and on the south side (near a Pizza Pizza and across from the Camera store) is a little shop called 'Gyros'. On the menu is the 'Nova Scotia Donair' and I can honestly say it's one of the best donairs I've ever eaten. I've brought all my fellow Toronto-Scotians there to try them out, and nobody has been let down. I susally grab one if I'm making a bus trip out of town, as it's located very near the bus station. Mmmmm... I'm craving one now. I signed up on this site just to post this, because that's how crazy about donairs I am. Enjoy.
